Sondrio is one of the 60 stop cities: at 5 PM in Garibaldi Square, a great event will conclude with the lighting of the Olympic flame
Sondrio is preparing to experience a day of great emotions: on Saturday, January 31, the Olympic torch will arrive in the city. It will not be a simple passage but an event, a 'city celebration', part of the program of the Milano Cortina Foundation, which will take place in Garibaldi Square, starting from 5 PM, and will conclude with the lighting of the flame. It has been just over two months since the departure of the torch on November 26 from Olympia: the journey in Italy began on December 6, which will complete on February 6 with its arrival in Milan, at San Siro Stadium, for the opening ceremony of the Olympics. The torch has traveled through Italy to engage local communities and promote the values of sport. The moment dedicated to the city, promoted by the Municipality, will feature alpine skiing, a discipline dear to the Sondrio territory, which debuts as an Olympic sport, with events taking place in Bormio. The champion Robert Antonioli will comment from the stage on the videos of the test events that took place in the past weeks, illustrating the three Olympic events scheduled for February 19 and 21: men's sprint, women's sprint, and mixed relay. The head coach Fabio Meraldi and the three athletes who will represent Italy at the Olympics, Giulia Murada, Michele Boscacci, and Alba De Silvestro, will be featured in a video greeting from the Pyrenees where they are competing in a race. From the stage, it will also be possible to follow the runners with a large screen live as they traverse the streets of the city.
«We are honored to be one of the 60 stages of the Olympic flame's journey and we look forward to sharing this moment with the citizens and the hundreds of young athletes from our sports clubs who have announced their presence - says the Councillor for Tourism, Sport, and the 2026 Olympics Michele Diasio -. We will welcome the flame and the torchbearers who will parade through the city's streets, including Martino Sala, Sandro Vanoi, and Simone Bertini: the Olympics celebrate sport at its highest levels, both in terms of values and competition, and the torch embodies them, leading us towards the two most extraordinary weeks ever experienced in our valley. We invite everyone to celebrate this epoch-making event together, united under the five-ring flag».
To allow the passage of the torchbearers and the caravan that will follow them through the streets of the city, arriving at 6:40 PM from Tirano, a series of temporary modifications to circulation and parking will be adopted: starting from 2 PM and until the end, parking will not be allowed in Toti Street, between civic numbers 35 and 11, De Simoni, Lungo Mallero Cadorna, and in Carbonera Square. From 6:30 PM until the passage is completed, transit will not be allowed along the route from Stelvio Street, at the intersection with Germany Street, Toti Street, Bertacchi Square, Mazzini Street, Adua Street, Milano Boulevard, De Simoni Street, Matteotti Bridge, and Garibaldi Square. For the strictly necessary time for the passage of the torchbearer, circulation will not be allowed along Via dei Palazzi, from Carbonera Square to Quadrivio Square, in Quadrio Street, Campello Square, Corso Italia, and Garibaldi Square.
