The Calvario of Tresivio is located among the vineyards of Inferno, one of the most renowned wine areas of Valtellina, just a few kilometers from Sondrio. It is a very frequented devotional path also appreciated for the beauty of the view over the valley. The trail, easy and immersed in nature, is ideal for a quiet walk that combines spirituality and landscape.

📚 History and architecture

The journey of the Calvario begins in 1646, with the laying of the first stone of the Santuario della Santa Casa Lauretana, wanted by the local community as a votive offering after the plague of 1630.
A few years later, in 1658, the Oratorio del Calvario was built, right on the cliff overlooking the village, thanks to the initiative of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament. It is said that stones from the castle of Tresivio, demolished in 1514, were also used.

The path recalls the tradition of the Sacred Mountains of Lombardy: it winds uphill along a trail lined with iron crosses and small devotional stations. Upon reaching the top, the Oratorio, in a simple yet intense baroque style, welcomes pilgrims with a sail-shaped façade and sober decorations, perfect for fostering meditation.

Very easy to reach

Tresivio is just a few minutes from Sondrio:

By car: follow the SS38 eastward for about 5 km, then head up towards Tresivio.
Parking: you can leave your car near Piazza Fontana.
On foot: from the center of the village, a marked path leads to the Calvario, a short walk of about 10-15 minutes with a gentle ascent.

Tresivio si trova sul versante retico della Valtellina, alla destra orografica dell’Adda, e il suo centro è attraversato dalla Strada Panoramica dei Castelli. Il Comune origina dal fondovalle e sale verso monte con due strutture morfologicamente molto interessanti quali la Rupe del Calvario e il Conoide della Fiorenza (un’antica città sepolta, nel Medioevo, da una frana; secondo la leggenda, in un’ora imprecisa verso il tramonto, si possono ancora sentire le campane della città suonare a festa). È attraversato da due torrenti: il Rhon, che segna il confine fra Tresivio e Ponte, e la Rogna, delimitante di Tresivio e Poggiridenti, entrambi affluenti dell’Adda. La sua posizione ha contribuito a renderlo un paese eminentemente agricolo, molto ricco di vigneti (caratteristici quelli sotto la Santa Casa) e meleti. A monte del centro una strada che risale il versante, procedendo tra i vigneti, conduce alle frazioni di Piedo, S. Abbondio, alla contrada Masotti e all’ultima Sant’Antonio. Proseguendo si giunge poi a Prasomaso (1.200 mslm) dove, proprio in merito alla mitezza del clima e alla purezza dell’aria filtrata dagli innumerevoli pini e abeti che circondano la zona, alla fine dell’800 venne costruito uno dei primi sanatori italiani per affetti da tubercolosi; dopo il 1970 venne adibito a colonia estiva, al giorno d’oggi è abbandonato. La strada indi sale sull’ampia spianata glaciale di Boirolo (1.615 mslm), località divenuta ultimamente centro residenziale estivo dei tresiviaschi, caratteristica per la sua spettacolare veduta sulle Orobie e sulla valle dell’Adda. Proseguendo rigorosamente a piedi dal punto più alto di Boirolo (un prato disabitato chiamato “Sgiazza”, ultimamente italianizzato “Biazza” ma è meno usato), si arriva alla Località Santo Stefano a 1.800 mslm, teatro delle feste organizzate dagli Alpini (la più importante si svolge il giorno di Ferragosto, caratterizzata dal pranzo a base di polenta e salsicce e dalla lotteria comunale).
