Casa Piazzi – Palazzo Cederna

Ponte In Valtellina

Discover Casa Piazzi, now Palazzo Cederna, in Ponte in Valtellina: a historic palace with frescoes, a garden, and memories of the astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi.

📍 Where it is located

Casa Piazzi, now also known as Palazzo Cederna, is located in the historic center of Ponte in Valtellina, in a place known as “Sü ai tre porti,” a popular name that recalls the three portals overlooking the same intersection of the block.

The address is just a few meters from the central square, easily reachable on foot while strolling through the historic streets of the village.

🏛️ A palace between history and astronomy

The building dates back, in its oldest parts, to the 16th century, but took on its current architectural configuration between the 17th and 18th centuries:

  • The architectural structures are from the 17th century
  • The internal decorative apparatus is largely from the 18th century

It was owned by the Piazzi family, who in 1746 gave birth to Giuseppe Piazzi, the famous astronomer who discovered the dwarf planet Ceres.
A marble plaque next to the main portal recalls his birth in this house.

Subsequently, between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, it briefly passed to the Guicciardi family before becoming the property of the Cederna family, who still own it today.

🖼️ Interiors and architectural details

From the stone portal with a full arch, closed by a wooden door, one enters an elegant vaulted entrance hall with walls decorated with graffiti (a recent intervention, perhaps inspired by ancient designs).

A short staircase leads to the first floor, which opens onto a large garden described in the memoirs of the writer Camilla Cederna, who lived in the house.

Among the internal rooms:

  • Frescoes with mythological subjects along the stairs
  • A collection of paintings including, among others, two portraits of Saint Ignatius of Loyola
  • A large canvas depicting a map of Jerusalem

⛪ The block and the Chapel of Saint Francis Xavier

The palace is part of a block of noble residences that also includes:

  • Other buildings that once belonged to the Piazzi family
  • The noble chapel of Saint Francis Xavier, with a lintel dated 1647

A small corner of the village rich in history and art, all to be discovered while walking among portals, coats of arms, and ancient courtyards.
