The Castles of Grosio: San Faustino and Castello Nuovo
🏞 A hill, two castles
In the heart of Valtellina, in Grosio, the Dosso dei Castelli hosts two medieval testimonies: the Castle of San Faustino and Castello Nuovo. These buildings narrate centuries of history and dominate the valley with their impressiveness.
🏯 Castle of San Faustino: the oldest
Built between the 10th and 11th centuries at the behest of the Bishop of Como, the Castle of San Faustino, also known as Castello Vecchio, stands at the southern end of the hill. Among the preserved remains, the Romanesque bell tower stands out, restored at the top at the end of the nineteenth century, adjacent to a small chapel that houses two medieval tombs carved into the rock. Archaeological excavations have suggested the presence of an oratory dating back to the 7th-8th century A.D., predating the construction of the castle.
🏰 Castello Nuovo: the Visconti fortress
Constructed between 1350 and 1370 at the behest of the Visconti of Milan, Castello Nuovo, or Castello Visconteo-Venosta, represents a significant example of medieval military architecture in Valtellina. Designed to meet strategic needs, it features a double curtain of crenellated walls and an imposing central keep. Archaeological excavations have revealed the presence of structures dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages, evidence of a prehistoric settlement.
