A castle in the heart of Chiuro
In the historic center of Chiuro, right next to the parish church, stands what at first glance might seem like a large noble house. In reality, it is the Castello di Stefano Quadrio, today the headquarters of Casa Vinicola Nino Negri, but originally a medieval fortress among the most significant in Valtellina.
The structure, dating back to the 15th century, was commissioned by Stefano Quadrio, commander of the Valtellinese militias in the service of Duke Filippo Maria Visconti. As a reward for his military services, the Duke granted him the right to build his residence in Chiuro, which would later become a symbol of his power.
🏗 Architecture and transformations
Over the centuries, the castle has undergone several restoration and adaptation interventions, but still retains some elements that testify to its fortified origins:
- a truncated tower, visible in the courtyard,
- defensive loopholes,
- and even a drawbridge, used for defense.
The main body of the building is dominated by large cellars dug into the rock, which reach up to four levels deep. Once used for storing wine and provisions, they are now the heart of Nino Negri's winemaking.
🍷 The castle becomes a winery
In 1897, the castle officially became the headquarters of Casa Vinicola Nino Negri, which has managed to enhance this historic place by linking it to its activity.
Right here, some of the most famous wines of Valtellina are produced, including "Quadrio", named after the castle itself.
Visiting this place today means entering a living page of Valtellinese history, where medieval architecture blends with wine culture. Guided tours provide the opportunity to discover the historic spaces, the cellars, and of course to taste excellent local wines.
