📍 Where it is located
The church is located on Via Senatore Enrico Guicciardi, in the historic center of Ponte in Valtellina. It is a building that goes almost unnoticed from the outside, but it houses one of the most fascinating eighteenth-century oratories of Valtellina.
🕰 A bit of history
The Church of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio has ancient origins: under the current floor, during the renovations in the 1980s, substantial remains of a previous building emerged, oriented east-west and completely frescoed.
Initially a private chapel, it changed dedication several times:
- First dedicated to Saints Cornelius and Cyprian
- Later to the Guardian Angel
- Finally, in the eighteenth century, it was dedicated to the Madonna del Buon Consiglio
An evolution that is reflected in the rich altarpiece, a perfect synthesis of various devotions.
🎨 What to see inside
As soon as you enter, the austerity of the exterior gives way to a refined and surprising decoration:
- The altarpiece depicts Cornelius and Cyprian on the left, angels and saved souls on the right, and, at the top, the Madonna with Child. There is also a devil in action, trying to drag souls to hell.
- The presbytery is decorated with fake perspective architectures, created by Fernando Crivelli, a quadraturist from the eighteenth century.
- The fake architectures that give depth to the presbytery are by Giovanni Petrazzini from Sondrio, also of the XVIII century.
- On the walls of the nave there are four oval canvases, depicting:
- Saint Louis Gonzaga
- Saint Anthony of Padua
- Saint Vincent Ferrer
- Saint John Nepomuk
- On the walls of the presbytery, allegorical figures are frescoed, alongside two other canvases with sacred themes.
The entire decorative scheme is well preserved and rich in symbolism, ideal for those who love to discover “minor” churches that are full of meaning and beauty.
