In the picturesque village of Mello, in Valtellina, stands the Church of San Fedele, dedicated to the protomartyr San Fedele, evangelizer of the Church of Como during the persecutions of Diocletian and Maximian Herculean. The apse, facing east, attests to the ancient origin of the building, which was completely rebuilt in the early 18th century. ​

🎨 An interior rich in masterpieces

Inside, the chapels are enriched by valuable paintings by Carlo Innocenzo Carloni, one of the most significant representatives of Rococo painting in Europe. The same artist created the scenes that decorate the choir, framed by the elegant quadratures of Giuseppe Coduri. The vault features frescoes by the painter from Delebio, Eliseo Fumagalli (20th century). ​

The church is adorned with marbles, inlay works, and goldsmithing, mostly gifts from emigrants, particularly to Rome. ​

L'abitato di Mello si estende su un ampio dosso panoramico, distribuito tra vigneti ben curati che si incontrano salendo da Traona lungo la strada provinciale che porta al centro del paese. Come per tutti i Comuni della Costiera dei Cech anche Mello è formato da numerosi centri abitati distribuiti su varie altitudini ed il suo territorio è confinante con quello dei comuni di Traona, di Cercino, di Civo e di Novate Mezzola. La sua esistenza ebbe inizio attorno all'anno Mille, come provano alcuni documenti della pieve di Olonio. Un passato importante che portò Mello a raggiungere il suo massimo splendore nel sec. XII, quando era il centro più importante dell'intera Costiera.
