Alpine Botanical Garden “Rezia”

An open-air museum of alpine flora

The Alpine Botanical Garden “Rezia” is located in Bormio, on via Giacinto Sertorelli, at an altitude between 1,350 and 1,400 meters. Inaugurated in 1982 at the initiative of botanist Giovanni Fornaciari, the garden covers an area of 14,000 sqm and hosts over 1,500 plant species, about 800 of which belong to the flora of the Stelvio National Park.

Soil: predominantly limestone and partly rocky, featuring terraces, steps, and paths to facilitate access and maintenance.

The garden is a reference point for the conservation of rare species, scientific dissemination, and environmental education.

🧒 Activities and Workshops

During the summer season, the garden offers a rich calendar of activities:

Guided tours: every Thursday from June 13 to September 5, at 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM.
Children's workshops: fun-educational activities for children aged 6 to 10, with different themes each week.
Thematic workshops: in-depth sessions on poisonous plants, dyeing, herbalism, and gardening techniques.
Musical events: concerts and entertainment in the garden during the summer.

Participation in activities is free or with a small contribution; reservation is recommended.

L'origine di Bormio è sicuramente molto antica. Lo conferma il ritrovamento di un bassorilievo risalente a un periodo compreso tra la metà del V sec. A.C. e i primi decenni del IV (anche se autorevoli studiosi pospongono di qualche secolo questa datazione). Lo stesso nome denuncia un’origine assai remota nel tempo: Bormio deriverebbe dall’indoeuropeo gwor “caldo”, labializzato dai leponzi in bhor, evidentemente per la presenza delle sorgenti termali. L’etimologia è tuttavia ancora oggetto di discussione. È certo che la particolare posizione geografica fu determinante per l’abitato che da sempre costituì un crocevia strategico per i suoi passi alpini. Se per quanto riguarda l’epoca romana si possono soltanto azzardare ipotesi, la storiografia e i documenti forniscono notizie più certe a partire dagli albori del primo millennio quando Bormio fu al centro di lunghe contese tra i vescovi di Como e di Coira. In quel periodo divenne il capoluogo di un contado che affermò la propria autonomia amministrativa, economica e giuridica, ottenendo privilegi e dazi sulle merci in transito, da sud verso nord e viceversa.
