La Torre di Segname

Gordona

Explore the Torre di Segname in Gordona: an ancient signal tower with a panoramic view of Valchiavenna. Discover history, architecture, and hiking routes.

An ancient lookout between history and legend

Southwest of Gordona, on a steep height of about 655 meters above sea level, stands the Torre di Segname, one of the oldest signaling towers in Lombardy. Its origin is uncertain: some historians trace it back to Roman times, hypothesizing that it was used as a point for optical telegraphy. However, it is more likely that the construction dates back to the 9th and 10th centuries, during the incursions of the Hungarians, as part of a defensive and observation system.

🛡️ Essential and strategic architecture

The tower, square in plan with sides of about 2.5 meters and walls thick up to 1.1 meters, is built of local stone and rests directly on the solid rock of the promontory. The original entrance, probably located several meters above the ground, was accessible via retractable ladder steps, a typical solution for medieval lookout towers.

The structure, devoid of significant openings, shows only the holes left by the scaffolding used during construction. This architectural simplicity has contributed to its preservation over the centuries.

🔭 A medieval communication network

The Torre di Segname was part of an elaborate system of signaling towers that allowed for quick communication along the Valchiavenna through smoke signals or flags. It is estimated that in case of emergency, news could travel from Chiavenna to Milan in an hour.

🛠️ Restoration and enhancement

In the 1990s, the tower was in precarious condition, with evident signs of structural decay. Thanks to the intervention of the Municipality of Gordona, a restoration project was launched that allowed the structure to be consolidated and made accessible to visitors. The work was completed in 2000, returning an important historical heritage to the community.

🥾 How to reach it

The tower is reachable via several hiking trails:

  • From Gordona: a path that traverses chestnut woods and ancient terraces.
  • From San Pietro di Samolaco: a hiking loop that also includes a visit to the suggestive "Ca' Pipeta," a rural dwelling built under a large boulder.

The hike, although challenging, offers breathtaking views of the Valchiavenna and represents an immersion in the history and nature of the area.

🎯 Why visit it

The Torre di Segname is an ideal destination for:

  • Enthusiasts of medieval history and military architecture
  • Hikers in search of scenic and suggestive routes
