Mulino di Bottonera – Chiavenna: visit to the industrial archaeology museum
📍 Where it is located
The Mulino di Bottonera is located in the artisanal district of Bottonera, in the historic center of Chiavenna, province of Sondrio.
🧾 History and characteristics
Founded in 1867 by Carlo Moro, the mill is a significant example of industrial archaeology. It utilized the hydraulic energy from the artificial Molinanca canal to power the milling machines. In 1930, the number of grinding stones was increased to six, introducing an elevator system and sifting of the flour .
The structure spans three floors plus a basement:
- Basement: housed the turbine and machines for cleaning grains.
- Ground floor: machine room, cleaning and washing of grains.
- First floor: rolling mills.
- Second and third floors: "plansister", semolina machines, and equipment for recovering by-products and packaging .
The mill was restored and converted into a museum in 1997, maintaining its original structure
