Ponte In Valtellina

Visit the Parochial Museum of Ponte in Valtellina: Renaissance frescoes, reliquaries, paintings, vestments, and the evocative Hall of the Sybils. Info and hours.

📍 Where it is located

The Museo Parrocchiale is located inside the parochial house of Ponte in Valtellina, right in the historic center. The entrance is next to the church of San Maurizio and easily reachable on foot from the main streets of the village.

🏛️ Origins of the museum

The idea of creating a parochial museum is attributed to don Leopoldo Civati, a priest and scholar, who dedicated significant effort over the years to the study and enhancement of the artistic heritage of the parish.
He was the one to promote the first exhibition of sacred art, paving the way for a project that has grown over time thanks to the work of other priests.

  • Don Antonio Marchesini and don Antonio Della Bella were responsible for the preservation and restoration of the assets.
  • Don Lino Urbani, during the restoration of the parochial house, decided to allocate the entire first floor to the museum.
  • In 1990, the parish priest don Battista Rinaldi oversaw the reorganization of the exhibition layout.

🖼️ What to see

The museum is organized in three rooms on the ground floor and in the Sala Civati on the first floor. The displayed pieces cover several centuries and document the richness of sacred artistic production in Valtellina.

🎨 The Sibille Hall

It is the most fascinating part of the museum. Once the oratory of the Disciplini and Santa Marta, this hall features:

  • A cruciform vaulted ceiling frescoed with twelve medallions depicting just as many sibyls, attributed to Fermo Stella.
  • On the walls are the four Stories of the Virgin and various detached frescoes from private homes donated to the museum.

💎 The other rooms

The other rooms on the ground floor host:

  • Liturgical furnishings
  • Precious reliquaries
  • Sacred objects used throughout the centuries in the church of San Maurizio

🧵 Sala Civati

Located on the upper floor, it hosts:

  • A collection of paintings
  • A collection of sacred vestments, enhanced by an exhibition in specially made cabinets
  • Rare and well-preserved objects that tell the story of devotion and care for local worship

🖼️ Main works

Among the most interesting pieces:

  • The surviving fifteenth-century panels from the wooden door of the parish church
  • Four paintings by Bernardino de Donati, which once served as doors of the altar piece by Giacomo Del Maino
  • A painting by the Bolognese painter Gaetano Gandolfi, created in 1773

🧭 How to get there
