Palazzo Guicciardi

Ponte In Valtellina

Discover Palazzo Guicciardi in Ponte in Valtellina: the noble residence of the Guicciardi with frescoes from the sixteenth century, loggias, stüa, and a portal with the griffin.

📍 Where it is located

Palazzo Guicciardi is located between via E. Guicciardi and via Chiuro, in the historic center of Ponte in Valtellina. The building consists of three connected complexes and is one of the most important historic residences in the town.

🏛️ A historic residence with centuries of transformations

The palace has been linked for centuries to the noble Guicciardi family, one of the most influential in Ponte.
The first documented news about the building dates back to the late 15th century, but over time it has undergone several expansions:

  • Mid 16th century
  • 18th century
  • 19th century, with a renovation designed by engineer Antonio Camillo Quadrio

It was also the birthplace of Enrico Guicciardi (1812–1895), a patriot and prominent political figure in 19th century Valtellina.

🖼️ Frescoes, stüa, and noble details

In 2000, during the restoration work of the ground floor on via Chiuro 2, important original elements were uncovered:

  • 16th-century painted cycles, hidden by wallpapers and whitewashing
  • A stone fireplace engraved with the Guicciardi coat of arms
  • Decorated wooden ceilings
  • A splendid stüa with an engraved date: 1576

These elements confirm the historical and architectural value of the palace.

🏛️ External architecture

The main entrance is located on via Guicciardi: a stone portal, whose key bears an engraved griffin, a rare and original element.

The eastern facade, facing the street, is decorated with:

  • A monochrome frieze with sirens, volutes, and noble coats of arms (Guicciardi, Quadrio, Paravicini, Odescalchi)
  • Windows protected by grilles, some of which are artistically crafted

Two masonry bridges connect the main body to other buildings of the same property on the other side of the street, forming an integrated architectural system.

🌿 The courtyard and loggia

The small internal courtyard is dominated by:

  • An elegant loggia on the first floor, recently reopened
  • Vaults supported by Doric columns
  • Full-arch structures that give the complex lightness and order

🍴 Historical interiors

Among the visitable rooms, the highlights include:

  • The spacious kitchen with a large stone fireplace (equipped with a small internal window)
  • The floor made of stone slabs
  • The aforementioned stüa from 1576, warm and welcoming, a true jewel of the house
