📍 Where it is located
Palazzo Piazzi Giacomoni is located in the historic center of Ponte in Valtellina, along via Piazzi, just a few minutes on foot from the main square of the town. The building is one of the most representative historic palaces of Valtellina, linked to the Piazzi family, an important local dynasty.
🏛️ Architecture and structure
The palace dates back to the 17th century and is an example of Valtellinese noble residential architecture.
The layout is simple and regular: a parallelepiped volume with linear facades, aligned windows without decorative frames, oculi in the attic, and a discreet access from the street.
Inside:
- Double apartment with sequential rooms on both sides
- A central double-height hall overlooking the garden through a terrace
- Painted decorations: the wooden ceiling of the hall is decorated with perspective motifs and still retains its 17th-century imprint, different from the lighter and airier decorations of the 18th century.
The structure also includes a tower-altana, a rare element in the area, which provides verticality to the main body of the building and testifies to the typological evolution compared to the older dovecotes.
🎨 Historical and artistic details
The Piazzi family, responsible for the construction of the palace, was one of the most influential in Ponte in Valtellina.
The building later passed to the Giacomoni family, who maintained its residential function.
The frescoed ceilings, the painted frames around the windows, and the well-preserved internal structure make the palace an interesting example of the transition between 17th and 18th-century styles.
