The spiritual heart of Valtellina
At the entrance of Tirano, amidst the vineyards and mountains of Valtellina, the Santuario della Madonna di Tirano majestically stands, considered the most important Marian place of worship in the valley.
Visiting the Santuario della Madonna di Tirano means immersing oneself in the history, art, and spirituality of one of the symbolic places of Valtellina.
📚 History and architecture of the Sanctuary
The history of the Sanctuary begins on September 29, 1504, when, according to tradition, the Madonna appeared to Mario Omodei, promising the end of the plague that was devastating Valtellina.
Following this miraculous event, the community decided to build a grand sanctuary in her honor.
Work began on March 25, 1505, the day of the Annunciation, and by 1513 the main structure was already completed.
The official consecration took place in 1528.
The architecture is a perfect example of Lombard Renaissance: the exterior is sober and elegant, while inside is dominated by rich decorations of stucco, frescoes, and gilding.
The dome and the tiburio were realized between 1580 and 1587 under the direction of Pompeo Bianchi.
🌟 What to see at the Santuario della Madonna di Tirano
Among the things to see in Tirano, the Sanctuary stands out for its extraordinary beauty:
- Monumental organ: created between 1608 and 1617 by the Brescian carver Giuseppe Bulgarini, it is one of the most beautiful in Europe for the refinement of its carved wooden case.
- Seventeenth-century frescoes: depicting episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary, enriching the visit with pictorial masterpieces.
- Lateral chapels: true treasure chests of sacred art, decorated with stucco and refined paintings.
- Temple of the Apparition: located exactly at the point where, according to tradition, the apparition of the Madonna would have occurred.
🍞 The Shield of Saint Michael: the sweet of tradition
During the visit to Tirano, one cannot miss tasting the Shield of Saint Michael, the typical sweet related to the Sanctuary.
It is a sweet bread shaped like a shield, decorated with sugar granules and divided into wedges, one of which contains a dried fig.
Its origin is linked to the miracle of 1504: according to tradition, Mario Omodei was collecting figs when the Madonna appeared to him.
The shape recalls the shield of Archangel Michael, whose statue rises above the dome of the Sanctuary.
This sweet is produced every year between September 1 and October 15, during the Feast of the Apparition.
According to tradition, whoever finds the hidden fig will be protected for the whole year.
The Shield of Saint Michael can be found in the local bakeries of Madonna di Tirano and is perfect for breakfast or a snack during your visit.
