The sentinel of Valtellina
The Torre de li Beli Miri is the undisputed symbol of Teglio and one of the most scenic viewpoints in Valtellina. Located on a hill south of the town, surrounded by a pine forest, it is what remains of the ancient Castrum Tilii, a medieval castle built on Roman-era foundations.
The tower, with a square plan, arrow slits, and originally elevated access, dates back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, it has suffered various destructions: in 1264 by Filippo Torriani, in 1430 by the Venetians, and in 1526 during the siege of the Grisons. In 1534, the Besta family purchased the castle, the tower, and the feudal rights from the Archbishop of Milan.
Its strategic position allowed for the control of communication routes between Valtellina and the Aprica pass. From the summit, the view extends for about 60 kilometers, offering a breathtaking panorama of the valley.
Next to the tower is the church of Santo Stefano, of early medieval origin, once an oratory for the military garrison. The area is ideal for walks and picnics, thanks to the presence of benches and the tranquility of the place.
Today it is one of the most recognizable symbols of the town, loved for both its historical value and the magnificent panorama it offers.
