A neorenaissance jewel between culture and memory
In the heart of Sondrio, Villa Quadrio stands out for its refined neorenaissance architecture and its cultural function. Built between 1913 and 1914 on commission from Emilio Quadrio de Maria Pontaschelli, a renowned journalist and writer, the villa was designed by the Milanese architect Adolfo Zacchi and realized by the engineer Francesco Polatti.
🏗️ Architecture and style
The villa has a rectangular plan and develops over three levels plus an attic. The main entrance is characterized by a central staircase leading to a balustraded porch, topped by a large terrace. The facades are decorated with bichrome graffiti that take up geometric and floral motifs typical of the Lombard tradition. Distinctive elements include decorated chimneys, terracotta battlements with wrought iron inserts, and corner balconies reminiscent of 15th-century residences.
🌳 The garden and monumental cedars
Surrounded by a large public garden, the villa is enriched by majestic Himalayan Cedars (Cedrus deodara), some of which reach heights of up to 30 meters. These trees, with trunk circumferences of up to 4.5 meters, represent a significant landscape enhancement for the urban area of Sondrio.
📚 The Pio Rajna Civic Library
Since 1936, Villa Quadrio has hosted the Pio Rajna Civic Library, established in 1862. The library offers a wide range of services, including reading rooms, a newspaper library, an audiotheque, a video library, and spaces dedicated to conferences and concerts. On the first floor, there are study rooms and areas dedicated to special collections, such as the Rajna Fund and the Valtellina and Valchiavenna Fund.
