A noble residence that tells the history of Valtellina

In the heart of Grosio, in the province of Sondrio, stands Villa Visconti Venosta, the ancient summer residence of the noble family of the same name. Today the villa hosts a museum and the civic library, offering visitors a journey through centuries of history, art, and Valtellinese culture.

🏰 Architecture and interiors

The villa has a "U"-shaped structure with a central body featuring a portico and loggia, flanked by two wings. The left wing, the oldest, dates back to the 17th century and retains rooms with decorations inspired by 18th-century Eastern art. The right wing, built in the 19th century, houses representative rooms, including a Renaissance-style hall with valuable furnishings, paintings, and objects.

🖼 Collections and relics

The museum houses a rich collection of period furniture, ceramics, paintings, and objects collected over centuries by the Visconti Venosta family. Among the most significant pieces are:

  • The armchair that belonged to Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour, friend of Marquis Emilio Visconti Venosta.
  • A volume of French proverbs annotated by Alessandro Manzoni.
  • Two painted altar panels by Cipriano Valorsa, from the church of San Abbondio in Semogo.

The civic library, located on the ground floor, holds over 5,000 volumes, including rare texts and historical documents.

🌳 The park

The villa is surrounded by a large park of 17,000 m², created at the behest of Marquis Emilio. The garden, bordered by a hawthorn hedge and a high wall, contains centuries-old trees and provides an ideal place for walks and moments of relaxation.
