The Sentiero Valtellina is a cycling and walking path that is 114 km long, connecting Colico, on Lake Como, to Bormio, in Upper Valtellina. It follows the course of the Adda River, traverses the entire valley floor, and is perfect for those who want to spend a day (or more) in nature, engaging in sports without the need to climb mountains.
You don’t need to be as fit as professionals: the route is almost entirely flat, can be done on a traditional bike or an e-bike, and is suitable even for families with children.
Why choose the Sentiero Valtellina?
- Because it is easy and safe
- Because you pass through many towns, each with something to see or eat
- Because along the way you find rest areas, bike rentals, train stations (so you can do just part of it and return by train)
- Because it’s a great way to unplug without going too far
What the route is like
The path starts at Colico, on the shores of the lake, and from there one immediately enters Valtellina. The route runs alongside the Adda and is entirely either paved or easy dirt. Along the path there are:
- 54 equipped areas to stop for eating, resting, or playing with kids
- 6 Rent a Bike locations to rent or return bikes
- 46 access points, many connected to the train (very convenient!)
The most interesting stops
Colico
Starting point. Lake, greenery, and mountains. From here, you start off well.
Morbegno
Nice historic center, and above all, you eat very well here. Sciatt, bresaola, cheeses... if you stop, you won’t go wrong.
Sondrio
The capital of Valtellina. Don't miss the Scarpatetti district and Castel Masegra. It’s also easy to navigate by bike.
Tirano
Here you’ll find the Basilica della Madonna and the famous Trenino Rosso del Bernina starts. Just a stroll through the center is worth it.
Bormio
The cycling path ends here. If you make it up here, take a tour of the spas or relax in town. After 114 km, you’ve earned it.
When to go?
The path is open all year round. In summer, it’s perfect for a long bike ride; in spring and autumn, the weather is cooler and it's really pleasant. In winter, some sections may be less comfortable, but it can still be used.
How to get there?
- By train: you can get on and off at various points (Colico, Morbegno, Sondrio, Tirano) thanks to the railway line that runs parallel to the route.
- By car: from Milan, you can reach Colico in about 1.5 hours; to Bormio in just over 2 hours.
