A journey through geology, history, and biodiversity just minutes from the center of Chiavenna
The Parco delle Marmitte dei Giganti is a Nature Reserve of regional interest, located just outside the village of Chiavenna, along the eastern slopes marking the transition to the Val Bregaglia. The area includes ancient paths, mule tracks, and rocky sections that lead to the old soapstone quarries, crossing a well-preserved natural environment rich in vegetation and geological interest.

- The park can be reached on foot from the center of Chiavenna.
- One of the main access points is from the area of the Orto Botanico Paradiso, just a few minutes walk.
- By car, you can park near the bridge of San Giovanni or in public parking areas.

🌍 What to see: the glacial mills
The so-called "Marmitte dei Giganti" are circular cavities in the rock, formed during the last glaciation. They have been created by the movement of water and debris under the glaciers, which carved out these deep and smooth natural wells.
The site is one of the best examples of these formations in Lombardy and is considered to have high educational and scientific value.

The park hosts a rich flora, with rare and protected species, mixed broadleaf forests, ferns, lichens, and seasonal blooms. Some of the species present are collected and cataloged in the nearby Orto Botanico "Paradiso", which can be visited freely.
📜 History and establishment of the Park
- The park was established by Regional Law no. 86/1983.
- Management was initially entrusted to the Consortium Parco Marmitte dei Giganti, and is now followed by the Comunità Montana della Valchiavenna.
- The area preserves prehistoric evidence, signs of extraction activities, and ancient terraced agriculture.

- Open and accessible year-round, with no entrance fee.
- The best time to visit is from April to October, but the trail is also passable in winter, with appropriate footwear.
- There are no significant architectural barriers, but it is not recommended for strollers or those with limited mobility.
