🍷 Vin Brulè: Traditional Recipe to Warm Body and Soul
Who has never tasted vin brulè? This hot and spiced drink has ancient roots: it is said to have been invented by Hippocrates and widely consumed in Ancient Rome, later becoming popular in the Middle Ages as a revitalizing remedy. Today it is a symbol of winter markets in Northern Italy and Central Europe, captivating with its unmistakable scent of cinnamon and cloves.
Perfect after skiing, snowshoeing, or simply for a winter evening with friends, vin brulè can be easily prepared at home with a few genuine ingredients. It warms the heart, frees the breath, and... yes, it also brings back a smile 😄🔥.
📝 Ingredients for about 1.5 liters of vin brulè:
- 1.5 liters of red wine (preferably full-bodied)
- 3 sticks of cinnamon
- 250 g of sugar
- 10 cloves
- 2 organic oranges (untreated)
- 1 lemon
- 1 apple
- 1 pinch of nutmeg
👩🍳 Preparation:
- Wash thoroughly the oranges and lemon. Cut the peel into spirals or strips, avoiding the white part.
- Wash the apple and slice it thinly.
- In a large pot, pour in the red wine.
- Add:
- the cinnamon sticks,
- the sugar,
- the cloves,
- the sliced apple,
- the citrus peels
- and a pinch of nutmeg.
- Stir well and bring to boil for about 5 minutes, until the sugar is completely dissolved.
🔥 How to adjust the alcohol content:
- Alcoholic version: serve immediately after boiling, very hot.
- Less alcoholic version: light a flame on the surface (carefully!), to burn off the excess alcohol. When the blue flames go out, the vin brulè will be lighter.
