Queen stage in Aprica with the double Mortirolo
Valtellina is set to take centre stage in the international cycling spotlight this season. The official route of the 2027 Giro d’Italia confirms for Tuesday 25 May one of the most eagerly anticipated and spectacular dates of the edition: the Sondrio–Aprica stage, announced as the queen stage of the pink race.
A leg-swinging stretch of racing with a route that will pack in some of cycling’s most legendary climbs. The star of the show will be the Mortirolo Pass, tackled no fewer than two times by the famous side from Mazzo di Valtellina: a double ascent that captures the heart of the stage and one of its most defining features, putting the stamina and ambitions of the very best riders to the test. Completing the challenge will also be the iconic climb to the Gavia Pass, at over 2,600 metres above sea level, before the finish in Aprica.
Aprica itself will be at the heart of the day, too, with a special significance for the local community. In 2027, the town will be celebrating the centenary of its municipal autonomy, tying this major milestone to a big international sporting event and to a stage expected to draw attention from fans and the media around the world.
The cycling calendar will also bring another major highlight to the roads of the Province of Sondrio. On 3 June, the Giro d’Italia Women will return to the area with a stop in Madesimo.
