Historical and Spiritual Heart of Sondrio
In the historic center of Sondrio, Piazza Campello hosts two indissoluble symbols of the city: the Collegiata dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio and the Torre Ligariana. These monuments represent a perfect blend of faith, art, and civic identity, telling centuries of Valtellinese history.
🏛️ The Collegiata: a Journey Through History and Art
The origins of the Collegiata date back to the 11th-12th century, when Sondrio was the center of a vast parish. Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous interventions, culminating in the 18th century renovation designed by the Valtellinese artist Pietro Ligari. The single nave, covered by barrel vaults, is flanked by six lateral chapels topped by matronei. The presbytery and the apse, completed in 1797 by architect Pietro Taglioretti, feature a neoclassical style, while the current façade was built in 1838 based on the design by engineer Giuseppe Sertoli.
Inside, the Collegiata houses works of great artistic value, including paintings by Pietro Ligari, such as the "Miracle of Saint Gregory the Great" and the "Virgin of the Rosary," as well as works by other artists like Giuseppe Antonio Petrini and Giacomo Parravicini, known as the Gianolo.
🏗️ The Torre Ligariana: Civic Symbol and Bell Tower
Next to the Collegiata stands the Torre Ligariana, 59 meters tall. Its construction began in 1740 based on a design by Pietro Ligari, but due to financial limitations, the original project was simplified. After the death of the Ticinese architect Giacomo Cometti, the works were completed in 1761 by Pietro Solari.
The tower houses a set of 9 bells, cast in 1936 by the Ottolina foundry in Seregno, tuned to the B flat major diatonic scale.
