The civic and historical heart of the city
In the very center of Sondrio, overlooking the historic Piazza Campello, stands the Palazzo Pretorio, a building that narrates over five centuries of political and institutional history of Valtellina.
Even today, the Palazzo is the hub of the city's administrative life, home to the Municipality of Sondrio.
📚 History and architecture
Built in the 16th century, the Palazzo Pretorio was established as a government seat during the rule of the Grisons over Valtellina (1512-1797).
It housed the podestà, the provincial court, and the prisons. After the annexation of Valtellina to the Cisalpine Republic, the palace maintained its public function.
The sober and elegant architecture reflects the austerity of the institutions of the time:
- A linear façade, enriched in the early 20th century with graffiti decorations.
- An internal courtyard with a double loggia.
- Spacious rooms, designed for administration and justice.
🖼️ What to see
- The façade: decorated with graffiti and coats of arms of the ancient Valtellinese families.
- The internal courtyard: refined, with full arches and an upper loggia.
- The Council Hall: venue for municipal meetings, embellished with 19th-century decorations.
- The Stüa Rigamonti: a precious room lined with carved wood from the 16th century, now used as the Mayor's Office.
- The Justice Hall: featuring allegorical frescoes and noble coats of arms.
🕒 Curiosities
- Piazza Campello owes its name to an ancient cemetery ("campello" in vulgar Latin) that existed here until the Middle Ages.
- The Stüa Rigamonti comes from an ancient Valtellinese residence and was transferred here in the mid-20th century, to safeguard a rare example of Alpine wooden craftsmanship.
- During the Grison rule, justice was administered in the Palazzo according to strict Rhaetian law.
